Can we all agree the biggest lie of our childhood wasn’t Santa…
It was the Danish butter cookie tin.
You’d see that beautiful blue tin sitting there and think, “Yes! Cookies!” You’d open it with excitement…
And there wasn’t a single cookie inside.
Instead, you found the original family junk drawer.
Buttons from shirts nobody owned anymore. Rubber bands. Twist ties. Paper clips. Random keys. Loose change. Old photos. Recipe cards. Screws. Nails. Batteries. Thread. Needles. Basically, anything that didn’t have a home somehow ended up in that cookie tin.
The funny part is… every family did the exact same thing.
Nobody talked about it. We all just somehow knew.
That empty cookie tin was no longer for cookies. It was now the place for all the important stuff nobody wanted to throw away but nobody knew where else to put.
And every kid made the same mistake.
You’d see that blue tin and think, “Today’s my lucky day!”
Nope.
Just another childhood disappointment served with a side of mystery keys and dead batteries.
Even now, when I see one, a tiny part of me still hopes there are cookies inside.
Life has taught me better.
That tin was never really about cookies.
It was the original family junk drawer… and somehow, every household got the same memo.
Did your family have one?
